Other Protected Handicaps – Chapter 15

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1982, 29 USC Sec. 794 defines a protected handicapped student as a child who is school-age with a physical or mental disability which substantially limits or prohibits participation in or access to any aspect of the school program.  The student must have a record of such impairment or be regarded as having such impairment under Section 504.  This disability limits one or more major life activities: walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning, working, caring for one’s self, and performing tasks.  In accordance with chapter 15, the school district provides services to each protected handicapped student without discrimination or cost to the student or family. The related services and accommodations are outlined in a Section 504 Plan Service Agreement that will be reviewed annually.  This Section 504 Service Agreement is intended to provide the student with equal opportunity to participate in school programs and extra-curricular activities to the maximum extent appropriate.   For further information, please contact the building principal, Supervisor of Special Education, or Assistant Supervisor of Special education.
