The Shippensburg Area Board of School Directors appointed Dr. Chris Suppo as the district’s next superintendent at its Board meeting on Monday, August 5th. Dr. Suppo is expected to assume his duties on September 9, 2019. Dr. Suppo has served as the Coordinator of Technology, Transportation, Community Relations, Online Academy and School Safety in the Greensburg Salem School District since 2007. Before that, he was the Director of Technology and Information Services from 2001 to 2007 in the Armstrong School District; Director of Technology at Apollo-Ridge; and Middle School and High School Technology Education teacher in the Blairsville-Saltsburg School District. Dr. Suppo also spent three years as a teacher in the Apollo-Ridge SD, and he began his teaching career in the Grove City Area School District.

Dr. Suppo earned his undergraduate degree from California University of Pennsylvania in Technology Education in May, 1992, a graduate degree in computer science in December, 1998; and he completed his Doctorate in Administration and Leadership Studies at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in May, 2013.
The Board is excited that Dr. Suppo will be serving as the next superintendent of Shippensburg. The Board undertook a comprehensive search that involved interviews with a series of outstanding candidates, and greatly appreciated the involvement of staff and community members in the process. Also, the Board would like to express its deep appreciation to Dr. Jerry Wilson for his service to the district as our superintendent, and to Dr. Greg Hoover for once again serving as our interim superintendent during the search process.

The Board will now work with our consultant, Tom Templeton with TEMPLETON Advantage, on a comprehensive review of the superintendent evaluation process, communication protocols, clarified roles and responsibilities, and other governance responsibilities.

Thursday, July 11 Briefing

The Board wants to express its deep appreciation to the staff who participated in the discussions with superintendent candidates.  As mentioned before, the Board is committed to being thoughtful and intentional in each step we take, and to ultimately select a candidate who can lead the district with skill and effectiveness for an extended period of time.  After continued and extensive Board discussion, and reviewing the comments from the participants in the conversations with candidates, the Board has decided to bring a candidate in to meet community stakeholders on July 29th in the Shippensburg Area Middle School Auditorium from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM.  At the conclusion of the community session — and after reviewing comments from the community, analyzing reference check information, and additional Board interviewing — the Board will determine the next steps in the process.  The Board is not in a position to make a final determination until the Board has thoroughly moved through this next phase of the process on July 29th.  More details to follow.

Thursday, May 2, Briefing

The application period for the superintendent search has closed and the Board is now preparing to review the credential files of each candidate that applied.  From there, the Board will determine which candidates to interview in the first round.  As the Board moves through the candidate selection and first round interview process, we will also be determining how the search will unfold after we’ve concluded the initial interviews.  More details will be provided on this site.  Furthermore, the Board has had the opportunity to review the stakeholder comments that resulted from the focus group discussions conducted on April 16th.  We will be looking at the survey results in the very near future as well.
