Dear Middle School Parents and Staff,
Over the past several days, we have noticed a jump in the number of new COVID positive cases at the
Middle School, which in turn has required the quarantining of a significant number of students. With
every case that is identified, case information and contact tracing data is shared with the PA Department
of Health (PA DOH). By itself, the ratio of students infected compared to Middle School population has
not reached the 5% threshold used by the PA DOH. However, when looking at the number of students
who are positive, combined with those quarantined, we must consider taking preemptive action for the
safety of all students and staff.
In an abundance of caution, providing a “reset” time period to help eliminate the possibility that the
Middle School could become worse, is a sensible measure. This coming week, the Middle School will be
closed to students, and students will be provided synchronous virtual instruction by teachers through
Friday, September 18th. Instruction will not be provided on Wednesday, September 15th which is a
planned in-service day. Students will return to in-person learning on Monday, September 20th.
Teachers will provide virtual instruction from their classroom unless a teacher is quarantined and is able
to provide instruction from their home.
In consultation with the PA DOH, they are supportive of this measure to pro-actively address these
concerns. This decision is being made to ensure the safety of students and staff, along with the desire to
provide a preventative measure to ensure we maximize instructional time and keep schools open for the
long-term for in-person learning.
Students will be provided synchronous remote instruction starting Monday at 10:30. A modified 3-hour
delay schedule will be used to provide staff time to prepare in the morning. The schedule for the
modified day will be sent in a separate email by Mrs. Benbow. For Tuesday, Thursday and Friday,
students will follow their regular schedule. Administration will send a separate email with additional
details to teachers.
Similar to the 2020-2021 school year, students will have until 11:59 PM to show activity in their classes
for attendance. Showing activity means actively participating in a live lesson or completing any learning
activity for each class. During resource time and IXL time, teachers will have open office hours via Zoom
or GoGuardian for students needing additional assistance. Students should contact their teachers for
more direction when needed. These links, times and teacher schedules will be posted by their teachers
within Learning Management System (Google Classroom or Schoology).
Students who may be in need of books or materials that they do not have with them at home, should
contact the building office. Families who do not have internet access at home should contact their
building office to request a mobile wi-fi device. Bagged breakfast and lunch curbside pickup will be
available for Middle School Students on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 11:30 -12:30 at the Middle
School student drop off location.
I understand the burden this places on families and staff to shift to four days of virtual learning so
quickly. However, given the circumstances, I believe that this action will help maintain future in-person
learning at school, and create a safer environment for all. The one thing we all learned last year, was
the need to be flexible and pivot quickly. Thank you for your understanding and support during what
continues to be unprecedented fluid times.
